Entering a New World: Leaving Hawai’i

Hawai’i vs. The Mainland ~ A comparison of the Hawaiian Islands to the east coast of the U.S. mainland

About the Weblog Author

My name is Renee and I created this blog for a class. Most people would die to live at a beach like the one above, well, that happens to be where I grew up. I am living in New Jersey but the weird thing is I was raised in Hawai’i on the island of O’ahu. Before coming to New Jersey for my junior and senior years of college at Rowan University, I never really had any experience of what we (islanders) call “the mainland.” I have to admit I originally left the islands to prove I could do it and find out what’s out there but now I am here for many reasons. I came with no one and expected little help (besides tuition payment from the parents). I also did not know anyone in the area at all.

Why New Jersey?

Can you think of a better place to challenge yourself? If you can survive here you can survive anywhere. All joking aside, I wanted to get pretty much as far away from the islands as possible. Don’t get me wrong, I love my home; it will always be my home and my heart is there. I had a little bit of island fever. There is also the fact that my home isn’t going anywhere, which means I can! Why not do all the traveling, exploring and answering to all my questions when I don’t have anything holding me back? Mortgages, pets, children (ahh) and the desire to hold a career with monetary stability will eventually chain me down to the prison of life.

Before that happens who is anyone to undermine or criticize what I choose to do with my life? Many people can’t believe I would leave Hawai’i. I just can’t believe how close-minded that is. I want to end my life knowing I did all that I could with what I had. I believe my plan is underway…

I graduated from Rowan in May of 2008 and I am now living in a nice beach town in central New Jersey with my boyfriend. I am literally one block from the beach and enjoying getting back to my roots (or some form of it since its the very, very cold, gray Atlantic Ocean.)

I think that making the move from Hawai’i to here is bold. I personally would not be able to move somewhere that I knew nothing about, nor that I didn’t know anyone there. Your efforts and, mainly, desire are traits that should be admired by all, rather than questioned. It is this commentor’s opinion that you should not care what almost all others think about you because, in the end, none of that matters. To summarize my point, I think my good friend and pediatrician, Dr. Suess, summarizes it best:
“Be who you are and say what you feel because the people who mind don’t matter, and the people who matter don’t mind.”

Be well and happy blogging!

I think it’s awesome that you ventured out to New Jersey! And the idea of transitioning out of college and into the workforce is definitely an interesting topic! I look forward to seeing more!!

…and for Mr. DWeazy, I thought you were cool until I read that you wouldn’t venture out of your home state…you clearly have no sense of adventure huh? Mr. Stick to the familiar…super cool! Maybe you should put down the Dr. Seuss books, leave the house and explore the world!

Don’t bring down the Suess,
He was a great writer.
Make your emotions all loose,
Everything will be lighter

T-Dot, you are mad,
Just please lay off Dweazy.
His taste isn’t bad,
Even though Suess easy.

Your emotions are unjust,
So relax and breathe deeply.
Find the one thing you lust,
Even if it is creepy.

Use this thing enjoy
And think of it a lot.
Even if it’s a toy,
Or some old broken pot.

Thinking of this thing
Will make you so happy.
Although this poem rings,
It is pretty crappy.

I’ll finish it here,
I may write some later,
As I say to you, dear,
Please don’t be a hater.

advertising inquiry: http://treddingtheunfamiliar.wordpress.com/

Hello,

I’ve recently looked over your site and believe that your reader-base and visitors might be a possible advertising venue for us.

I am interested in traditional link advertising as well as using link “blurbs” on certain pages of your site, or on certain articles – perhaps even submitting articles. This includes but is not limited to purchasing a post also. We are open to any idea that would allow us to capture interested readers, but would prefer to avoid the traditional “Ads by Google” and “Sponsored Links” sections.

Please let me know if you’d be open to discussing advertising possibilities further.

Thanks in advance,
Travis
