If you think that you have all the time in the world to apply and get the career you want because you’ve got at least a few months left in college, here’s some harsh advice: time is running out.
“Classes NEVER beat experience…“
If you haven’t already taken an internship or are currently in one, you need to get on this (education majors; your semester of student teaching counts as an internship). Apply NOW for summer internships (which often are paid because they require full-time job hours). Usually, like in my case, school-year internships are unpaid, but require fewer hours a week and the internship institution or organization will work with your school schedule with little or no interference. Don’t be discouraged by the looming unpaid label. Think of it as a class that gives back more than any other class you could possibly take in college. However, do not treat it like a class. You cannot hit the snooze button and sleep through it and you should take it a lot more seriously than you probably do classes. If the internship thinks you aren’t trying or are goofing off, they will fire you the same way they would an employee. It is a lot different from teachers and classes. You will welcome a supposed strict teacher who will still accept late work.
The amount of knowledge and experience gained from an internship is invaluable. You cannot put a price on being able to write down something in the box of “prior experience” on your job application. When you get out into the real world, most employers aren’t willing to take a risk on someone without any experience.
Sadly when it comes down to it, the amount of schoolbooks you’ve absorbed or high level classes you’ve taken never beats out experience.
So your newest priority is to apply and get that internship in the field you would like to enter after graduation! Another entry called steps to an internship on this blog will show you exactly how to find, apply and obtain the internship to NEED to get a career after graduation. Also, Billy’s blog has covered resumes in past entries.
